Assistive Technology on Campus

The university provides students with disabilities with many resources to enable them to use and access the computer labs and other facilities open to students.  Hardware and software that is located around campus is described below.  Students who need further technology accommodations should contact the Disability Support Services office.

Hardware

MyReader  is a stand-alone equipment specially designed to enlarge printed material for people who have low vision and can no longer comfortably use glasses or special lenses to read regular size print.  Optelec products use a video camera that focuses on the printed page.  The print is then enlarged and displayed on a monitor.  Our CCTV’s were upgraded in 2009.  We currently have MyReader by Humanware.  Specific details on the features can be found at:  http://www.humanware.com/en-usa/products/low_vision/desktop_portable_magnifiers/_details/id_125/myreader2.html

Eye-Pal is a scanner/reader that converts printed material to refreshable Braille, speech, or a saved text file.  The Eye-Pal scans printed material and instantly converts text to speech or sends the information to a Braille Display.  Eye-Pal's patented motion detector allows scanning a bound book at 20 pages per minute. You turn a page over; wait half a second for the shutter sound, turn again and again. With a single keystroke you can easily start and stop scanning or reading or get the description of the page layout spoken as a sighted reader sees it.  The saved text can be carried anywhere and used with MP3 players, key chain memory, CDs and more.

Software

Inspiration is organization software with an outlining tool designed for people who are visual learners.  The features let you create a picture of your ideas or concepts in the form of a diagram.  Each idea or thought is placed in an icon that can be customized with clip art from the symbol library.  Each concept icon is linked visually, with notes attached to expand upon the concept.  Visually, students quickly prioritize and rearrange ideas.  The visual diagram converts into a standard Roman numeral style outline, helping create clear, concise writing.  With its easy-to-use interface students focus on their ideas, not the process.

JAWS ® for Windows is an advanced screen reading software that provides access to today’s software applications and the Internet.  With its internal software speech synthesizer and the computer’s sound card, information from the screen is read aloud, providing technology to access a wide variety of information, education and job related applications.  JAWS also outputs to refreshable Braille displays, providing unmatched Braille support of any screen reader on the market.  Generally for users who are blind.  A training tutorial is included.

Kurzweil 1000 is a text reading software that makes printed or electronic text accessible to people who are blind or have limited vision.  Kurzweil 1000 converts the printed word into speech.  Users can scan in books, articles, bills, and advertisements – almost anything that fits on a scanner, so they can quickly have the information read aloud.  Kurzweil 1000 can also share information with the outside world through an array of powerful options including outputting documents and audio files to portable devices; sending files and excerpts to familiar e-mail applications; and faxing or photocopying text and images.  Has a summarizing feature to preview materials.

Kurzweil 3000 is text reading software that reads scanned materials, imported files, and the web while improving reading comprehension, speed, and fluency.  It includes word decoding, highlighting, writing, and study skills.  Specifically designed to help students with learning and reading disabilities, ADHD, and other special needs, K3000 is useful for anyone who seeks multi-sensory learning.  If a page has charts, graphs, or pictures, the student sees these as the captions are read aloud.  The writing and study skills tools help students to produce notes and summaries and compose writing assignments.  Word processing tools speed up the writing process and assist with editing.  The read-the-web feature lets you read websites; language-learning lets you scan and read documents in foreign languages.

Dolphin Supernova is a magnifying software program that enhances comprehension of software and its speech.  Improved features include text and images that are smooth and clear up to 60x enlargement, choice of high visibility mouse pointers, smooth scrolling for browsing long documents, choice of screen magnificent style, and easy screen maintenance.

Read & Write Gold  is a reading and writing software program that helps with reading and writing needs in a truly inclusive setting using the standard Windows environment.  It allows students to work independently in an inclusive environment ensuring they 'keep up' with their peers. It provides comprehensive support for dyslexia enabling speech feedback and word prediction for accurate and error free documents.
